Why I Recommend The Southern Highlands For Your Wedding (As A Wedding Photographer)

The Southern Highlands has a sophisticated country feel to the area and its wedding venues. The venues all capture the beauty of the region, as well as provide beautiful back drops and features for your wedding day. From a black tie event at Hopewood House to a relaxed village wedding in Burrawang; the highlands has it all.

Wedding Reception in Burrawang

Being the highlands, the area is full of drama all year round. From the very different seasons to the dramatic weather (and often spectacular skies and sunsets). The wedding spaces are intimate, inviting and cosy for your wedding guests.

The colours of the highlands (especially in autumn and spring) are an absolute delight to photograph. Creating beautiful backdrops and natural styling at each and every wedding venue. The light in the highlands is also beautiful all year round. With soft light as the sun sets being my favourite time of the day for photos.

When I talk with my clients I always like to ask about what they want to get out of their wedding. The vast majority just want to create a wonderful experience for their family and friends. A wedding day where they can be themselves and enjoy their time with their nearest and dearest. The highlands creates this experience perfectly, with venues

Wedding Vendors I Recommend In The Southern Highlands

Having photographed many weddings in the southern highlands over the years I have gotten to know some wonderful vendors who service the area. Everyone from florists, caterers, marquee hire, wedding hair, wedding makeup, wedding celebrants, DJ’s, stylists and event coordinators. Below are some vendors I am always happy to recommend.

How To Get The Most Out Of Your Southern Highlands Wedding

  • Every season is beautiful in the southern highlands. To me, autumn is extra special. The amazing colours you can get definitely make up for any cold snaps you might have on your wedding day!
  • It can often be cool even in the summer time. When planning your outfits make sure you have something warmer to wear over the top (especially for the bridal party).
  • There are lots of church options for wedding ceremonies in the highlands. You can still have your beautiful reception and opt for a religious ceremony off-site.
  • The best time of the day for wedding photography is as the sun starts to set. Therefore, talk with your wedding planner and wedding photographer to discuss timings before you lock them in.
  • Whilst there are lots of accommodation options in the area, things book out fast. Make sure you give yourself and your wedding guests enough time to get accommodation organised when you are considering your wedding date for your Southern Highlands Wedding. This is especially important if you are planning a destination wedding here.
  • Consider a bus service to pickup and drop off your guests. It means they can enjoy the wedding and enjoy it responsibly.
  • Have a look at all of the wedding venue options I have listed. There are a variety of locations to suit weddings of all sizes and styles.
  • When considering your wedding venue do check to see if you have exclusive use of the venue. This will ensure you have the whole venue to yourself and your wedding guests.
  • Don’t fear the cold when planning a wedding in the highlands! Most venues have beautiful open fire places that provide a wonderful atmosphere for you and your wedding guests.

Things To See and Do Whilst Visiting The Southern Highlands

I always say that one of the best parts about planning a wedding is the experiences you get to have along the way. If you are planning a couple of visits to the Southern Highlands whilst planning your perfect wedding; then you may want to consider some of these activities to enjoy whilst in the region.

  • Wine – If you like your wine tasting; here are some stunning southern highlands winery options to consider whilst visiting. Popular wineries to visit include Centennial Vineyards, Eling Forest Winery, Artemis Wines, Tertini Wines and Joadja Vineyard.
  • Good Food – There are lots of amazing food options to consider whilst visiting the southern highlands. If you want fine dining, perhaps consider a visit to Biota Dining in Bowral. For something a little more fun, check out Bernie’s Diner in Mossvale with its amazing menu of USA Diner inspired food (and a wonderful atmosphere).
  • Golf – If you are fond of a round or two of golf there are some well known courses in the southern highlands to explore. You have golf courses at the Gibraltar Hotel, Peppers Cragieburn Golf Course, Highlands Golf Club and Bowral Golf Club.
  • Penrose State Forest – A beautiful forest on the edge of the of the highlands. It is popular for walks, bike riding and exploring. It is not a bad spot for bridal photos either!
  • Display Gardens – There are many beautiful gardens in the region to explore at different times of the year. Check out Red Cow Farm, The Secret Garden, Southern Highlands Botanic Garden and Corbett Gardens during your wedding planning visits.
